California and New Mexico experience similarities and differences in their climatic conditions attributed to climate change, the work of the wind, and deserts. Indeed, both states have deserts that influence their climatic conditions. California has the Great Basin Desert , the Colorado  Desert, and the Mojave Desert while the Chihuahuan Desert is the main desert in New Mexico. Deserts influence the winds, temperatures, and precipitation that specific regions receive. Particularly, deserts have more impact on the Southern parts of California where they have increased the regional temperatures hence changing the wind patterns. The warm winds rise and flow toward the Pacific Ocean leading to increased rates of evapotranspiration and ultimately precipitation. In New Mexico, despite the desert, the region generally experiences an arid and semiarid climate.

The winds in New Mexico are generally hot and dry. As such, due to the absence of a big water body, the effects of these winds is erosion and huge temperature surges. It is worth mentioning that the main difference between the climatic conditions of California and New Mexico is the way climate change has affected the two states. Indeed, the climate change in California is caused by the interplay of temperature changes, wind patterns, and the neighboring water mass of the Pacific Ocean. Global warming in California has, therefore, led to increased precipitation, temperatures, and overall disorientation of the climatic seasons. Specifically, climate change in California is responsible for wildfires, increased air pollution and droughts. In contrast, the fact that New Mexico does not have a coastline implies the climate changes in the state are as a result of aridity, semi aridity, and the irregular wind patterns. As a result, streams have shrunk due to reduced snow packs leading to harsh environmental implications. It is also crucial to note that the climate change in New Mexico is as a result of winds and currents from the Gulf of Mexico.
